What is HR Policy?
A Human Resource (HR) Policy serves as the company’s general and continuing set of rules and regulations to which employee’s behavior and expectations are guided and managed. The HR Policies may include important matters such as recruitment, promotion, compensation, training, selection, and etc. Sometimes, these policies will administer employee’s conduct like dress code, absences, interpersonal interaction, functions, and contributions to the company.
As you can see, recruitment is one of the most relevant matters involving the company’s journey to growth and development. Since 2017, hiring managers are continuously facing problems in retaining new hires. Data shows that there are around 46% of the newly hired employees who failed and are terminated from their jobs in a span of 18 months. 11% of them were due to lack of skill while 89% are due to matters relating to attitudes like motivation and lack of coachability. How to Create HR Policies?
Employees are the company’s most valuable assets, and as an HR Manager, your focus is on developing strategies to improve their skills and experience through the policies that will help you manage your people. That alone remains to be your high priority.
In that case, we will give you a few easy tips on creating effective HR policies.
1. Know Your People
It’s good to know your people first hand because that’s when you will be able to understand them. Of course, while considering your employees, make sure that it is not detrimental to the company itself. It should provide your employees and the company the benefits.
2. Put The Policy Down On Writing
This is basically drafting of policies in papers. After initiating and uncovering facts, consider weighing the policies that you are going to impose. It’s best that you provide strict but reasonable standards.
3. Explain and Discuss the Terms Clearly
Your employees have the right to know what are the rules and regulations to be followed. Besides, you cannot subject someone to a specific punishment if he/she doesn’t know the rules in the first place. Communicate the policies made to your employees at all levels. That would definitely make a lot of difference. Be specific and clear with your policies, but always give ample amount of flexibility to meet the changing needs and conditions.
4. Always Be Open for Suggestions and Criticisms
One good trait of being a leader, be it in business or school-related activities, is his/her capacity to listen to the people he/she leads and always be open for any suggestions. We all are going to become a better version of ourselves, and it’s good to hear other people’s opinion sometimes.
5. Evaluate and Reformulate
Policies are often made to accommodate the needs and functions which you considered relevant and effective to the workforce. When a policy is no longer working, maybe it’s time to amend or repeal it.
6. Abide by the Law
In making policies, you must take strict consideration with the law. Comply and abide with all the requirement the law has provided. That should be your basic premise.
