8+ Trip Itinerary Templates
With travel blog posts making us crave and dream of lazy summer days and nights of stargazing in a far-off island, it’s tempting to just pack our bags and hop on a plane. But we all know it doesn’t work that way. It’s not easy to get away from our office desks. Then again you deserve it if you’ve been working yourself to the ground lately. So do yourself a favor and create that trip itinerary.
5 Steps to Create a Trip Itinerary
Step 1: Get your trip information.
Write down your flight numbers and schedule as well as reservations you’ve made for restaurants and hotel accommodations. Directions from the airport going to your hotel and train or bus stations are also important. If you’re using a rental car on the trip, include this information for fees, hours of operation and arrangements you’ve made with the rental company.
Step 2: Make a list.
What are the activities you plan to do on the trip? You can’t do everything in such a limited amount of time but it helps to list down the places you want to explore and what you want to experience. Food? Research the destination’s best restaurants. Nature? Write down the best trails to take. Worry about crossing off the list when you get there.
Step 3: Map your stops.
It makes sense to want to make as many stops as your trip can allow. Since your stops are most likely going to be from adjacent locations, map them out by matching them to nearby cities and towns. Don’t forget to know how and where you’re going to make them if you’re taking public transportation.
Step 4: Leave time for exploring.
Creating a travel itinerary doesn’t mean you need to follow it to a T. Your trip will be much more memorable and twice as fulfilling if you allow flexibility. So you didn’t make it to the Grand Canyon. You still have Monument Valley and some trail you may have stumbled upon. Time for a little adventure, yes?
Step 5: Don’t get pressured.
It’s never wrong to give yourself some downtime so you may want to leave out a day or two unfilled on your itinerary. Don’t set the alarm. Wake up anytime you want. Have your breakfast at any quaint little cafe you may find along the road. Talk to the locals. No schedule? Let it be.
