How to Craft Your Opportunity Statement?

There is a simple formula to create your opportunity statement so it is up to you to follow these formulas and make sure whether your statement is correct and proper.

Step 1: Determine the Purpose of Your Statement

What is the first thing you do before preparing an official statement? You must think about the purpose behind making this statement, what is the aim of the statement and what will you get by making one? Determine the sole motive of your statement and carry on with that motive till the end.

Step 2: Mention the Current State

Your opportunity statement must mention the current state of an organization or a company. In simple words, it means that you must mention the problems or issues that your organization is going through. It may have no problems at all, but still, needs some development or changes in the usual system of work or any product, this will also come under the current state.

Step 3: Describe the Impact

After mentioning the current state, you must start describing the impact of these issues if they carry on in detail to make the other members understand that. you can also describe the impact of the decisions that you make while working on these issues.

Step 4: Define the Desired State

Next, you must define the desired state that you want the team or organization to be in after making the required changes. This is what you ate working for and if you can express your desired state, you can go ahead and do so.

Step 5: Revise

Do not forget to revise your statement after completing the body of your document. A thorough revision is a must when the time comes to make the final changes and present it to the other team members. If you see any mistakes or errors, make sure that you correct them before the final presentation.

What Format Does an Opportunity Statement Follow?

A team needs to be focused and have their mind cleared before they start working on a challenge that comes before them. A team may feel distracted by some irrelevant cool and fun ideas or anything else that is less useful, they can use an opportunity statement to help them stay on track and keep them motivated. It generally follows a simple format that includes:

1. Needs: This mentions what exactly your user needs to do? Describe what action do they need to achieve or what are the specific problems that they need to solve? You can also think about the insights that you have discovered and note them down.

2. Because: This ‘because’ simply refers to why is it important to solve this challenge? Think about the motivation or emotion behind solving the issue for the user.

3. Limitations: This section describes the limitations of the project. These limitations may include financial or resource-based so make sure you capture them in your statement.

Some Helpful Tips

1. You do not have to include the cause of the problem in your statement.

2. Do not include any solutions or how you will be addressing the problem.

3. Try to keep your focus on only one problem or issue. You do not have to address multiple problems in your opportunity statement.

4. Establish and create a desired state that is achievable and does not go for something which you cannot achieve at all. Make sure that you determine the desired state that your team will be able to successfully work on.
