Who Is a Teacher?

A teacher, or an educator, is a person who is trained and has a career in teaching people. They are someone who helps others, especially children or teenagers, to acquire knowledge, skills, and values. Teachers are commonly found in schools, colleges, institutions, and other learning centers, but they can also be found in our respective homes.

The parents, most especially the mother, are considered to be a child’s first teachers, and they can also continue to act as teachers if they choose to home school their child. Just like most professions, a teacher may have their own set of specialties, which will guide them on what to teach their pupils.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Teacher

The main role of teachers is to apply different concepts to their pupils, such as math, the English language, and some aspects of science and technology through classroom lectures and presentations. Their role is also to prepare lessons, grade papers, manage the classroom, meet with parents, and work closely with school staff.

Being a teacher is much more than just executing lesson plans, in today’s world a teacher’s role is a multifaceted profession; they carry the role of a surrogate parent, class disciplinarian, mentor, counselor, book keeper, role model, planner and many more.

In the modern world, the role of teachers has also been slightly modified. Their job is to counsel students, help them learn how to use their knowledge and integrate it into their lives so they will be valuable member of society. Teachers are encouraged to really tune into how each individual student learns, and try to really challenge and inspire them to learn.

The Qualities a Good Teacher should Possess

Of course, a person may need to have the skills and proper training, as well as a degree in education to become a teacher. But aside from those credentials, it would make them a better teacher if they possess the following traits.

A Teacher Should Be Kind

A good teacher shows kindness to their students, colleagues, the parents and everyone around them. It truly changes the environment in the classroom and school. Being a kind teacher helps students feel welcomed, cared for and loved.

A Teacher Should Be Compassionate

Compassion is the utmost feeling of understanding that is necessary for teachers. A compassionate teacher models that characteristic to the students with their actions, and as a result students will be more open to understanding the world around them.

A Teacher should be Emphatic

Empathy is such an important trait to have and to try to develop in teachers and their students. Being able to put yourself in someone’s shoes and see things from other people’s perspective can have such a powerful impact on the way we make our decisions and actions.

A Teacher should be Optimistic

Being a positive teacher is not easy when we’re always met with problems and with very limited time and solutions. However, staying positive amid the difficult situations can have such a tremendous positive impact on the students and everyone around them. Looking on the bright side always seems to help make things better.

A Teacher should Inspire

Everyone looks up at a great teacher and they want to be a better teacher, they want to be a better student, even better, they want to be a better person. A great teacher uncovers hidden treasures, possibilities and magic right before their students’ eyes.

What Is a Resume?

A resume is a single or multiple-page formal document that lists a job applicant’s biographical information, educational attainment, work experiences, skills and other credentials, and a few character references. A resume is composed to provide the hiring manager with a detailed summary of an applicant’s qualifications for a particular job position, and it is not usually meant to provide a complete picture of the applicant.

A well-written resume gives the potential employer enough information to convince them that the applicant is worth giving a shot at a job interview. A one-page cover letter usually accompanies the resume and is sufficient to provide additional information about the applicant’s qualifications as well as their desire and sincerity to join the company.

What Are the Types of Resumes?

Resumes come in different formats, but one thing is certain for resumes: it should be your tool to starting your career. Here we discuss and contrast the available types of resumes commonly used.

  • Chronological. This type of resume is the most commonly used among the four. This resume puts emphasis on the previous work experience and lists them chronologically.
  • Reverse chronological. A similar type of resume but instead of listing the employment history with the most recent first, the first one on this type of resume is the applicant’s first ever work experience.
  • Functional. This type of resume focuses more on the applicant’s skills and abilities rather than the work experience. This resume is good for first-time applicants with no previous work experience.
  • Combination. From the name itself, this type of resume combines the first two types and consists of two pages. The first page would use the chronological format while the second page would use the functional format.
  • Targeted. A more complex type of resume wherein it is more personalized to suit what the company is looking for from an applicant. This resume may be time consuming to write and is not advisable when submitting to multiple employers, but this type of resume will usually stand out from among the rest.

What Is a Good Resume Important?

Before an employer will take valuable time to interview you, he or she wants to meet you—on paper. How you impress that employer with your resume can, and will, make all the difference. Here we discuss why it is vital to have a well-organized resume.

A Superb First Impression of You

The resume is what gives the employer an initial impression of you. If you do your resume poorly, then the employer will also think of you poorly, and your resume will most likely be thrown in the garbage. Your resume needs to stand out, be clean, legible, and presentable. If your resume is well-made and visually pleasing, then you may probably get the chance to be called back by the company for an interview.

A Demonstration of Your Business Etiquette

The resume will demonstrate if you have taken the time to learn about the company as well as familiarize the position you are applying for. Researching about these will go a long way and will show the employer that you are indeed interested in working for them, and this may give you a higher chance of getting interviewed.

An Opportunity to Highlight Your Unique Skills

The resume is where you’ll get the chance to display your skills no matter how unusual they may be. This is where you can communicate the most important features about yourself. You can design your resume in whatever manner best suits you, just as long as it stays professional and appropriate.

An Opportunity to Communicate with the Company Clearly

You can never expect what questions will be asked from you during the interview and where the conversation with the interview will lead to. So in anticipation for the interview, the resume can give you a chance to carefully think through the things you want your employer to know about you.

How Can You Become a Teacher?

The journey to being a teacher is a long, arduous one. Not everyone answers the calling, but almost everyone of us can be teachers (if you have the passion). Here we map the teacher’s road to success (-fully teaching).

Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

The main requirement for teachers to be able to teach in schools is a bachelor’s degree. Kindergarten and elementary school teachers are required to have a bachelor’s degree, though preschool teachers might be able to start teaching with only an associate degree. Some school systems require their teachers to have a major in content area such as math or science. And high school teachers are also often required to have a major in a particular subject area.

Engage in Student Teaching

Acquiring classroom experience is a requirement for aspiring teachers. They should have a certain amount of hours of supervised teaching experience in order to have a license.

Get a Certificate or a License

Though the process of getting certified or licensed vary across different states and countries, the most common way to achieve this is by passing a general teaching certification exam as well as tests in the individual subjects that they will be teaching.

Continuing with Higher Education

Though teachers can begin their work with a bachelor’s degree, many public schools encourage their teachers to earn a master’s. Those who earn the master’s degree might also see the possibility of higher pay, greater job flexibility and easier advancement into administration positions.
