Easter as a Religious Holiday

Easter can hold two different celebrations, which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Easter Bunny. Regarding the religious holiday of Christianity, this is the day commemorating the time when Jesus Christ rose from the dead after having been crucified by the Romans. Easter is often called a movable holiday because it does not fall on a certain date every year. It falls on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Thus, Easter can be held anywhere between March 22 and April 25 every year.

The origins regarding the name of this religious feast day is unknown, and it is believed to have been derived from Eostre, the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Others believed it was derived from the Greek and Latin word Pascha, or Pasch, which means “Passover,” which is the Jewish festival commemorating the event wherein the Israelites were granted freedom from Egypt and their journey through the wilderness toward the promised land. Since the crucifixion and resurrection occurred after he arrived at Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, Pascha eventually came to mean Easter.

Easter: The Celebration

Easter for Christians is a time of reflection and penance. It occurs during Lent, which is a 40-day period during the Christian church year. This occasion commemorates the time wherein Jesus Christ spent time alone in the wilderness before starting his ministry. Before Lent begins, the day before the period starts is called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, wherein it is the last day for consuming food and having fun before the fasting begins.

The week prior Easter is called Holy Week. The days included in the Holy week are Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the Last supper of Jesus and his disciples; Good Friday, which commemorates the day of Jesus crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, which is the day between the death and resurrection of Jesus. After then comes Easter Sunday, also known as Easter tide, which includes the celebration of Jesus’s ascension into heaven afterward.

On the commercial side, the general public also celebrates Easter through Easter egg hunts and other fun activities revolving the bright and jolly celebration. This revolves around the Easter bunny with is the figure surrounding the hunt for decorated chocolate eggs. Other symbols include bunnies, baskets, and different kinds of candies.
