What Is a Work From Home Proposal?

A work from home (WFH) proposal is a document submitted by employees to their superiors to request/suggest doing their work remotely at home. It’s like a more elaborate proposal letter with supporting data and information that entices employers to consider the employees’ WFH plea. WFH proposal can also be called as a remote work proposal. Once it’s approved by an employer or superior, the employees can start doing their work at their homes on the agreed-upon date.

How to Create a Work From Home Proposal

WFH agreements aren’t easy to arrange due to certain risks and circumstances. But because they’re necessary at times and can prove to be beneficial to employees’ welfare, WFH privileges must be granted in particular situations. Introduce WFH settings to your employees clearly by presenting them with a well-formulated WFH proposal document. We encourage you to follow the tips below.

Step 1: Explain the Employees’ Scope of Work

The scope of the employees’ work is an important element in knowing the nature of their job description. The landscape of how their scope of work is normally delivered will be changed in a WFH setting, that’s for sure. So for clarity purposes, the employees’ scope of work must be explained in the proposal. You don’t need to make it too detailed. As long as the main points of their job are emphasized and explained concisely, it’ll do. The scope of work in the proposal is as a reminder to the employees that their job remains the same despite working away from the office/headquarters, but with few distinctions.

Step 2: State the Reason(s) for WFH Settlement

Employees will be open and delighted with a proposed WFH settlement. Some of them might not even question it suspiciously. But for transparency and formality, you must state the underlying reason why you’re proposing employees to work from home. Your employees have the right to know why changes and immediate implementation should happen.

Step 3: Enumerate the Company-Provided Resources

Not all employees have the resources to do their jobs effectively and efficiently at their homes. For that reason, your company needs to spend money to make the telecommuting policy settlement equitable for every employee. So in the proposal document, make sure to enumerate the resources that are provided by the company for WFH employees, such as laptops, internet routers, pocket WiFis, etc. Because your company owns such resources, you must indicate in the document that any damages to them will be charged to the employees through salary deduction.

Step 4: Establish Strict WFH Policy

Employees working from home must still exercise proper professionalism and standards in delivering their outputs. That said, you must emphasize a WFH policy in the proposal. The purpose of a WFH policy is to protect the welfare of the company. Remember that WFH employees will be handling company properties and information outside the workplace. If they, in any way, damage or disclose them to outside entities, the company could be placed in jeopardy. WFH employees breaching the policy must face certain sanctions, possibly termination. Other than, a WFH policy will incline WFH employees to observe the same work ethic as they do in the actual workplace.

Step 5: Implement Strict Shift Schedules and Deadlines

Working from home doesn’t mean that your employees are free to work at any hour. They still need to report for work on time. For that reason, the proposal must indicate a strict shift schedule. It’s advisable to stick to one shift in a WFH setting to keep employees on the same page despite being away from their colleagues and superiors. The proposal can also indicate a flexible work schedule for some eligible employees, especially team leaders and supervisors. Aside from work schedules, you must also implement strict observation for productivity and project deadlines. Sanctions should be issued to employees who fail to meet their quotas and finish projects on time.
