An application letter is a job application document which job seekers submit to companies along with their resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience while also stating why you are qualified for the job you are applying for.
Whether you are writing an application letter in response to a job advertisement or just searching for a job that has not yet been advertised, the objective will always be the same, which is to get an interview. The application letter is likely the first communication you will have with an employer, and they will judge you on this letter as to your worthiness for an interview. How to Write an Application Letter?
- Get directly to the point. In your first paragraph, simply explain the reason why you are writing. Mention the job title that you are planning to apply, and also where you found out about the job listing. You may also mention on this part why you are a strong candidate, but this section should generally be short and direct.
- Provide them with information different from those on your resume. Sending an application letter will also require you to send a resume. Your application letter, therefore, does not have to contain exactly the same information from that on your resume. Your language can be a bit more personal than in resume bullet points, and you can narrate about your previous work experiences and career.
- Convince the employer that you are indeed the best. Your primary goal with this letter is to land an interview. Your secondary goal is to get a job offer. Use your application letter to further both of these causes. Provide information that can strengthen your claim that you are an additional value that the business should not pass on. Try asking yourself, How have other jobs prepared me for the position? and What would I bring to the position, and to the company?
- Close with all the important details. Include a thank you at the end of your letter. You can also share your contact information. If you’d like, you can also mention how you will follow up regarding the application.
