What Are Mountains?

A mountain is a huge land form that extends above the surrounding land in a limited area, generally in a peak formation. A mountain is often steeper than a hill. It is formed through structural forces or volcanic activity. These forces can locally move up the surface of the earth. Mountains wear away slowly through the action of rivers, weather conditions, and snows. A lot of mountains are isolated summits, but most happen in huge mountain ranges.

There are three major types of mountains: volcanic, fold, and block. All of these are formed from plate tectonics when portions of the Earth’s crust move and crumple. Major mountains tend to happen in long linear curves, identifying tectonic plate boundaries and activity. Forces, isostatic uplift, and intrusion of ligneous matter forces surface to push upward. If the height is higher and steeper, then it is considered as a mountain, if lower then a hill.

A mountain’s climate tends to become colder at high elevations. It is because of the interaction between radiation and convection. Sunlight in the clear spectrum strikes the surface and heats it. The surface will then heat the air. The greenhouse effect of gases in the atmosphere would keep the ground at roughly 60-degree Celsius and the temperature would break down aggressively.

Why Mountains Are Essential to Mankind

Millions and millions of people living in plains benefit from mountains. Both dominant and small rivers on Earth are the sources. Mountains also play an essential role when it comes to the water cycle. They capture moisture from the atmosphere and release it in the form of snow or water, which is important for industries and agricultural activities.

Because mountains have plant, crop, and animal diversity, they are considered to be the center of biodiversity. They are also a great source of food, such as mushrooms, birds, and other forms. Mountains also provide good grounds for recreation, sporting, and tourism movements.
