Life is a gift worth celebrating. People love life so much that most of the big holidays are actually just celebrations of it. Out of this gratitude of life comes the conception of baby showers, a tight-knit gathering of people preempting the life that is soon-to-be born. In this tradition, the mother is “showered” with gifts by her close friends and family expressing their regards for the success of her delivery.

Elements of a Good Baby Invitation

Like any other event, hosts of baby showers need to inform guests about the baby shower or birthday party by sending out invitations. These baby invitations come in different designs and gimmicks, but regardless of their form and size, the invitations must not miss out on having the following elements:

  • Name: If the parents have not come up with the name of the child or are still not ready to reveal it yet, then put the name of the host instead. Usually, hosts of baby showers are the parents themselves, but the parents’ friends and relatives can throw one for them, too. Nevertheless, indicating the name of the host is important for guests to know whose party it is.
  • Date and Time: The date and time indicated on the invite should be final. Any changes made after the invites are sent out will jeopardize not only the event but the guests’ schedules as well. Invites should also be handed out at least two weeks before the baby shower to give the guests ample time to prepare.
  • Location: The location can simply be the address of the venue or, if the venue is hard to locate, a map and directions will be a big help to the guests.
  • Contact Information: The host’s contact details are important for guests to respond to the invite and make additional inquiries regarding the baby shower. It could be a phone number, an e-mail address, or a social media handle.
  • Theme: The theme of the baby shower should be reflected on the design of the invitation. Doing so will give the guests an expanded idea on what the theme is about and will help them pick their outfits should there be a dress code.

Steps to Make a Great Baby Invitation

  • Decide on your design: Choose a design language that conforms with the theme of the baby shower.
  • Phrase your invitation: Work on the content of your invitation starting with a clear and direct statement of purpose. In the case of baby showers, you can always start your invitation by saying “You are invited to a baby shower for (insert mom-to-be’s name)” or “Join us for a baby shower for (insert mom-to-be’s name).”
  • Add details regarding the event: Indicate the when and the where of the baby shower. Put the location map at the back of the invite if necessary.
  • List the host’s contact details: At the bottom of the invitation, add the contact details of the person that the guests will reach out to. This will make sure that the guests can keep a correspondence to the organizer if they have concerns or questions.
  • Mention special information: Should the guests respond to the letter for confirmation? Is there a dress code for the baby shower? Will it be okay to bring a plus-one? It’s good to let the guests know about the host’s preference regarding the event so they can prepare ahead of time.

Tips for a Great Baby Invitation

  • Don’t saturate a spot with much information: Put each separate piece of information on a new line to keep it neat and readable.
  • Make your map easily discernible: Aside from providing a detailed location map, you can also provide specific instructions to the event such as parking locations and traffic situations during a specified period of the day.

Types of Baby Invitations

  • Traditional Baby Showers: It is the standard gift-giving ceremonies for mothers who are about to deliver a baby. Most of the time, they are held 4 to 6 weeks before the mother’s due date and are participated in only by the mom-to-be’s female friends and relatives. However, modern trends show that males can be invited, too, and some baby showers are even specifically held for the dad-to-be.
  • Baby Sprinkle: While traditional baby showers celebrate the coming of a first child, baby sprinkles anticipate the birth of a subsequent child. They are not as grand as a baby shower but they still serve as an opportunity for the mother to be given gifts for the child. Most baby sprinkles are held when the soon-to-be-born child is of different gender or when the gap between the pregnancies span to a number of years.
  • Sip and See Baby Shower: In other countries, baby showers are held after the baby’s birth because of some cultural taboos. These baby showers are called sip and see showers, where guests come to “sip” on a drink from the party and “see” the baby. Unlike traditional baby showers where there can be restrictions on the guests, sip and see baby shower invites everyone including children. The purpose of this type of shower is for the parents’ friends and relatives to see the newborn child and is held usually 2 to 8 weeks after the baby’s delivery.
  • Gender Reveal: A modern party idea with the purpose of revealing the gender of the baby to the parents’ family and friends, gender reveal parties come in fun and exciting ways. In most cases, the parents will make the doctor write the gender of their baby down on a note and they will open it together with the guests. Some parents hire pyrotechnics to make a fireworks display that spells their baby’s gender while others get an ultrasound technician to find and announce their baby’s gender at the party itself. The ostentatious nature of gender reveal parties is the reason why they have been struck with controversies and criticisms over the years.
  • Adoption Baby Shower: Adoption baby showers are held to celebrate the successful adoption of a couple to a child. It is mainly held to welcome the child to the parents’ circle of friends and relatives. The adopted child can be at any age, though, so the ambiance is very similar to a birthday party rather than a traditional baby shower.

Baby Invitation FAQs

What does RSVP mean?

Comes from the French expression “répondez s’il vous plaît”, RSVP is an invitation card staple that requires the receiver to confirm their attendance to the event. Another variation of RSVP is the Regrets Only RSVP, which means that the invitee only needs to reply if he or she cannot come to the event. Either way, adhering to the RSVP will help the host determine a head count that he or she needs in organizing the event.

When do you hold a baby shower?

A baby shower is usually held when the soon-to-be-mother is around seven months pregnant, a period where the pregnancy is usually deemed safe and the mother is still not experiencing any pains from labor. It will also give the soon-to-be parents enough time to determine what items they need to buy after going through the gifts they have received from the shower.

Where does the term “baby shower” come from?

The term baby shower comes from the nature of the event where the guests “shower” the soon-to-be mother with items that she or the baby needs. The name is based on the much older tradition bridal shower, where the bride is put under a parasol and is showered with gifts.

Baby shower presents an opportunity for people to show their support for an expectant mother. But more than a social gathering staple, it is a celebration of the new life that is to come, with gifts as its confetti and glee as its confections.
